In this exercise, students will produce a animated rendering of a static object using a mobile camera.
Assessment objectives

Assessment objectives include:

  • Representation of Ephemeral qualities of space through cinematic media
  • Exploration of processes and representation techniques for development of composite media representing complex spatial qualities
  • Representation of spatio-temporal relationships between site and architectural object
Exercise Type Project
Evaluation Criteria
High Pass
The animation explores and combines multiple representation techniques to successfully transmit the spatial complexity created by the site, the sukkah and a time variable. The animation successfully represents mutliple spatial conditions and ephemeral qualities of space and their tension with the site. The cameras and their trajectories are carefully planned and are used to further intensify spatial qualities. The timing of the animation is carefully studied and mapped.
Pass
The animation explores a number of representation techniques to transmit the spatial complexity created by the site, the sukkah and a time variable. The animation represents spatial conditions and ephemeral qualities of space and their tension with the site. The cameras and their trajectories are carefully planned, helping with a good flow in the animation. The timing of the animation has been studied.
Low Pass
The animation transmits the spatial complexity created by the site, the sukkah and a time variable. The animation represents a spatial condition and its tension with the site. The cameras and their trajectories are planned. The timing of the animation hasn't been studied.
Fail
The animation is incomplete, lacks an adequate number of frames, and / or fails to properly transmit a concept due to a lack of craft or under-development of any of the animation processes and techniques.

With the cinematic media we can represent the ephemeral qualities of space. We can choose to represent how the spatial qualities of a project change throughout a time interval. This interval might be a few seconds long, or might stretch out for years. Throughout this interval we might choose to represent how the site transforms with the project, or even how the project changes or even decays.

Throughout the semester we've learn how to develop different 3D systems to represent the spatial qualities of a site and a project. For this project we will combine these strategies, and develop new processes to represent the ephemeral qualities of space. Through a combination of representation techniques we will choose and represent ephemeral qualities of space changing and transforming on a given time interval. We might choose to represent these changes at multiple scales.

For the assignment, the sukkah will be mostly static, and the site and site elements might be changing within the given interval. We will only allow two type of camera movements in the whole animation (ie zooming and panning, or moving and panning)

The animations will be presented to a group of guest critics on Wednesday August 14th at a location TBD

The first project should be presented too, and further developed as needed. The further development and completion of the first project for the final review will help improve the grade of the first animation project.
