In this exercise, students will produce a short animation (less than 1 minute), that describes the relationship between the parts and whole of a small architectural work, and between this work and its site.
Assessment objectives

Assessment objectives include:

  • Development if a spatio-teporal understanding of architectural and environmental systems
  • Development of multiple media representations to be composited into cinematic media
  • Understanding of part to whole relationships within the Sukkah project and the site through time-based media
Exercise Type Project
Evaluation Criteria
High Pass
The animation properly describes the project objectives. The animation properly displays a complex set of relationships within the sukkah and the site. Cameras have been planed and properly developed to describe the conceptual framework of the project. Frames and frame locations have been carefully studied to effectively achieve the conceptual and representational goals of the project. The project has been successfully composited into a single video file
Pass
The animation properly describes the project objectives. The animation displays a simple relationship within the sukkah and the site. Cameras have been planed and developed to describe the project. Transition between views and cameras may sometimes cause confusion. The animation has been compiled into a video file, but the quality of the video might be lossy.
Low Pass
The animation somehow describes the project objectives. The animation has a number of technical issues restricting a proper conceptual representation of the project. The animation displays a simple relationship within the sukkah and the site. Cameras have been developed. Transition between views and cameras hasn't been carefully studied.
Fail
The animation is very rough and under-developed. No major effort or media exploration has been presented. A large number of technical issues exist. The composition of the final video is poor, and the quality of the video is low.

Throughout the first four weeks of class we have been building up skills that have served as a foundation for our first animation project. The basis of a high-quality animation is created by a combination of material, immaterial and object transformations of a clean and detailed 3D model. The characteristics and quality of an animation can be defined by a combination of lighting, camera and material systems.

This first project will consists in a short animation (less than 1 minute), that will describe the relationship between parts and whole of your sukkah project and between site and sukkah. For example, you may choose to describe this set of relationships with an animation showcasing the construction/modeling process of your sukkah.

You animation project should present a successful development of the following digital processes:

  • Development and / or specification of VRay materials .
  • Development of object animations.
  • Development of camera animations
  • Successful rendering of the scene
  • Compositing and post-processing of the material.

With this project you will be able to design not only the way in which you describe the part to whole set of relationships that exist within your Sukkah and the site, but we are capable to manipulate different types of media to represent a conceptual framework for our Sukkah project.

The animation will be displayed at the beginning of class on the projector. Put your video on a flash drive to load it at the beginning of class.
