Compositing Renders and 2d Linework

Screenshot LTL-arthouse.jpg
Students will produce a composite exterior rendering of a 3d model of their studio project. An appropriate camera position will be established, a rendered image produced with proper sunlighting in VRay, adjusted in Photoshop, and finally merged with 2d linework in Illustrator. This 2d linework will display correct lineweights and hidden lines, and will be manipulated in order to accentuate elements of the design.
Assessment objectives
  • Understanding of VRay controls and settings
  • Ability to set up and control lights in Rhino + Vray
  • Ability to produce and edit lineweights in perspective
  • Produce final drawings composed of image and lineweights
Exercise Type Problem Set
Evaluation Criteria
High Pass
Final drawing is fully composed and portrays a strong point of view, consisting of a very clean, precise render image and clean, adjusted linework.
Pass
Final render has a good balance of contrast / brightness, clean linework is overlaid with proper lineweights.
Low Pass
Rendered image could use adjustements. Linework overlaid is messy and lacks any lineweight adjustments.
Fail
Rendered image is unsatisfactory (too dark, difficult to see) and the drawing is missing linework overlays.
Uses Tool(s) Tool:Rhino v4.x , Tool:Illustrator CS5 , Tool:VRay
Uses Workflow(s)

Using your own studio model, set up a perspective image for creating a composite render drawing. This drawing must include a VRay render overlaid with proper linework. VRay render should be clean and simple - using sunlight to produce shadows and if needed, adjusted in Photoshop to produce a good balance of brightness and contrast. Linework placed on top of image should adjusted to show proper differentiation, just like linework in a orthographic or axonometric drawing.
